New to Twain

Welcome to Mark Twain Elementary!

Here are a few things you will need to know.

PARKING: Parents in all grades are welcome to park and walk their children into the building! Parking is available in the Braes parking lot by the ball fields, library and on the side streets off Braes Blvd. There is no parking on Braes Blvd. between Underwood and Aberdeen. There is also no parking allowed on Aberdeen between Braes and Stella Link. The Underwood parking lot is reserved for KINDERGARTEN PARENTS.

CARPOOL:  The following guidelines are in place for arrival and dismissal at Mark Twain: The carpool lane for drop-off and pick-up of all students in grades K-5 is located on Aberdeen (south side of school). Cars may enter only from the west bound lane of Aberdeen – turning right into the drop-off lane. Traffic heading east on Aberdeen will not be allowed to turn left into the drop-off lane. For morning drop-off pull into the carpool lane and Safety Patrol students will come to your car and escort your student to the cafeteria. Students will be allowed to exit cars only from the passenger side of the car. Dismissal for all students is at 2:50 p.m. To pick up your student from the carpool lane,  you will enter the lane in the same manner as drop-off.  A staff member will ask you the name of the student and call them out from the cafeteria.  A Safety Patrol student will escort your student to the car.  Parents must stay in their cars!

SCHOOL HOURS: School begins promptly at 7:30 am. A first bell will ring at 7:20 am to signal students that school begins in 10 minutes.  School is dismissed at 2:50 pm.

ARRIVAL:  Kindergarten Procedures – Parents may park in the Underwood lot and walk their children into the building through the gate at the northwest corner of the building (by the Kindergarten playground). All Grades – Students may report to classrooms at 7:20 am or may be dropped off as early as 7:00 a.m. in the cafeteria where they will be supervised until the first bell rings at 7:20 am.

DISMISSAL: Dismissal for all students is at 2:50 pm.  Parents may gather in the front rotunda, in front of the school or outside the cafeteria and pick up in the classroom when the bell rings at 2:50 pm.  Students will not be checked out in the office after 2:30 p.m.  If it is necessary to take your child out early from school, you must do so before 2:30 p.m.

LUNCH:  Students can pay for lunch with cash OR school issued lunch cards which can be pre paid in advance. Payments can be made in CASH to the HISD Food Services cashier in the cafeteria during drop off hours each morning or online  HISD Food Services Parent Online, an on-line using a credit card at School Café: https://www.schoolcafe.com/. Please note that there is a five percent convenience fee per transaction.

JOIN YOU STUDENT FOR LUNCH:  Feel free to join your Twain student during his/her lunchtime – you can bring lunch or join them while they eat the school lunch. There are designated tables for parents and students plus your student can ask one friend to join them if they wish. See your teacher for their specific assigned lunchtime.

DRESS CODE: School colors are red, white and blue and our mascot is a Tiger! Click HERE for the daily dress code.  The last Friday of each month is a “free dress day”.  Sometimes students will be invited during announcements to wear theme shirts on a Friday like college shirts or football team shirts.  Every Friday students are allowed to wear “Twain Event” t-shirts from previous events such as our Spooky Spectacular and Huckleberry Bash events. Typically a few weeks before each event t-shirts will go on sale at the school store and students are allowed to wear those shirts everyday leading up to the event.

COMMUNICATION: The following are primary methods of communications between the school and families:

Twain Times e-Newsletter: This is a timely way to receive current news and detailed information about upcoming events at the school. The e-newsletter is sent each week to the email address you specify.  Click here to sign up.  The Mark Twain PTO never shares its email list. For more information, email twaintimes@gmail.com.

Living Tree:  Living Tree is an electronic messaging app.  Teachers will invite new parents to join their class group via email. Once the invitation is received, parents should register and download the app.  Important messages from administration and teachers will be delivered through this system. For more information, email Michele Rawson at mrawson1@houstonisd.org.

Tuesday Folders: Red folders go home every Tuesday and contain hard copies of both classroom notices and important school-wide communications.  The monthly calendar will be sent home on the first Tuesday of each month. This calendar will contain school-wide activities and events.

School Messenger System:  A telephone notification system which is primarily used when immediate notification is necessary (i.e. weather emergency).  Please make sure we have current cell and work phone numbers on file for you in the office.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS: There are after school programs available. Visit http://marktwainpto.org/enrichment-programs/after-school-program/ for more information.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED AT MARK TWAIN:  The Mark Twain Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a key support system to our principal, teachers and staff and positively impacts the educational experience for our children. As family members of Mark Twain students – you are a member of the PTO!  Look for sign up sheets posted outside each classroom for class volunteer opportunities and read the Twain Times to learn more about how you can volunteer at events and in the library.  PTO meetings are open to every Mark Twain family and are held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 8:00 a.m.  These meetings are a great way to learn more about what is going on and ways to get involved.

MARK TWAIN ON THE WEB: The Mark Twain Elementary school website is http://www.houstonisd.org/Twaines.  The Mark Twain Elementary PTO website is www.marktwainpto.org. Both are full of valuable information pertaining to the school and its many activities both school and PTO sponsored.

THE MARK TWAIN COMMUNITY: Feel free to approach your Twain teachers, Twain staff and Twain parents about anything! We are all here to help and welcome you to our wonderful Mark Twain Community.
