Approximately 150 students (K-5th grade) study strings (violin, viola, cello, guitar) in classes and individual or “Buddy” lessons. The more experienced groups perform for school and community activities. Many continue to middle and high school orchestra programs, where they shine from their Mark Twain learning. The program this year is cut back, due to state budget problems; however, returning and some new students will be taken in August.
Frequently Asked Questions:
- How do we sign up for the program? New participants should complete a form fromĀ Dr. Rask’s office near the music room in August, when school starts
- What is the cost of the program? So far, tuition is $350 per person, each semester, payable in advance to Mark Twain in the main office. You may make two payments of $175.
- Do I need to have an instrument? Yes, Instruments are rented (except guitars which must be bought), from local shops. Names of shops are always available outside the String rooms. Please, Internet violins are not encouraged! They are usually troublesome for everyone.
- When are classes held? This year there will be no 7:15 am classes. Private and Buddy lessons are held for returning students, space available, from 9am until 2:00. Parents of returning students, please collaborate with the String teachers for scheduling a lesson time which must agree with the classroom teacher. Some will have only groups; some will do both. Groups are scheduled at 3:00, on different days (schedule to be posted), except Kinder’s small groups with Mr. Vantreese, at 10 am, on days according to his schedule.
- How often should my child practice? Children should practice every day. In Kindergarten, 5 or 10 minutes will be enough; in the other grades, 15 min. to 1 hour can be done. The only amount that is unacceptable is zero (0). Make the most of time, talent and finances. There will be a practice chart included with each student’s music packet.
The string teachers appreciate your interest, and take it seriously when you enroll. We avoid scheduling lessons at recess, ancillary, GT or lunch times. Please help us to plan!
