Each year Mark Twain ES participates in the Houston Independent School District’s Name That Book contests. Name That Book is a district-wide reading motivational contest sponsored by HISD Library Services. The NTB contest serves to acquaint HISD students with contemporary and classic literature as well as contemporary award-winning books, representing a variety of genres. Most of the titles are new and are chosen from the Texas Library Association’s 2×2 (K-2) and the Bluebonnet (3-6) reading lists.
Students interested in participating in the contests should begin reading the books on the appropriate NTB list (see below link). The list involves a significant amount of reading, so students are encouraged to get an early start. In December or January, interested students will take a test (one question from each book), and 7 students will be selected to practice and compete. Further details about the format of the test can be obtained from Mr. Deering. The teams (K-2 and 3-5) will meet once a week after school with the librarian and/or parent sponsors, (Glenn Deering, Penny Linsenmayer, Suzy Brown). These teams compete against other HISD schools in a district-wide competition.
